How To Buy Chickens — What to look for
Now that you have decided to raise some chickens, how do you know what to look for and which ones to purchase? It is imperative that you know at least the basics when it comes to choosing the best birds for your coop whether they are laying hens or broilers and fryers. Purchasing chicks is one way of getting a head start on giving your birds the healthiest diet and raising possible for the best egg production or meat consumption. With so many different breeds and types to choose from, having some knowledge about them will help to make the best decisions possible.
There are tons of websites that are good sources of information on many of the different types of chickens and which breeds are the best for the purpose you are raising them. Depending on your intentions you may need to purchase one specific breed over another to best suit your plans. Gathering information about the many types and brreeds of chickens and what breed is best for either egg laying or meal production will greatly benefit you when the time comes to buy your chickens.
If gathering eggs for your personal use or for selling is your main goal for raising chickens, you will need to consider the best breeds for that type of production. Leghorns and Rhode Island Reds are most often preferred for excellent egg production, and the laying hens do their job well. Getting a rooster is not a must to the egg laying production unless you want fertilized eggs for hatching. If not, opting to forego purchasing a rooster will save you time, money and hassle. When choosing a good laying hen, watch for signs of bad health. The eyes should be bright eyed, and alert with the chicken moving around often. Their feathers should be in good condition with excellent color and definition. Do not buy laying hens that sit still often, or do not walk in the peppy manner known to chickens.
When choosing chickens solely for food and meat consumption, the most common breeds that will provide good quality meat are Ross, Arbor Acres, and Peterson chickens. These three breeds are the most commonly preferred for their meatiness and provide proper amounts of nutrients as well. Purchasing these chickens requires a good eye for healthy specimens or good quality chicks from healthy laying hens that are able to be raised healthy to produce the best quality meat when the time arrives.
Saving money is a good idea, but when it comes to buying the least expensive chicks, laying hens, broilers, or fryers is not always the best idea. Sometimes those cheap chickens are cheap for a reason and that reason could be an un-noticed disease or a sickly bird that could infect an entire coop, leaving you with dead or damaged chickens. If you find a good supplier that produces top quality specimens, sticking with them would be wise and perhaps working out variations of deals or payments can be made with consent to continue purchasing from them exclusively. Finding a supplier is not difficult, but finding a trustworthy and excellent one can be. Trust your instincts and for the rest you don’t know — research is the key.

Bantam Chickens And Their Many Different Breeds
To better understand the numerous types and kinds of bantam chickens, we need to understand the actual definition of the word. When used in relation to fowl or chickens, bantam is used for any extremely small fowl. The way most people have understood this rating is by understanding that for most of the regular breeds of chickens there are some bantam counterparts. These are most often 1/4 to 1/5 the size of the regular chickens, thus earning them the addition of the term miniature or bantam to their original name.
When considering the original namesake of bantam, this chicken or fowl has no regular counterpart. The most popular and commonly known bantam chickens are the Dutch bantam, the Sebright bantam, the Japanese bantam and the Dutch bantam. Due in part to their size and ease of care, bantams have rapidly risen to the top of the list as pets used primarily for shows or competitions. Because of their size, they will require way less food, space, and maintenance resulting in them being a preferred pet.
Some of the most widely known breeds of bantam chickens are the Cochin, Japanese Bantams, common Bantam, Barnevelder, Old English Game, Polish chicken, D’Uccle, Pekin, Serama and the Sussex bantams. The following are brief descriptions of them:
The Cochin bantam is one of the largest breeds of bantams with the male known for weighing in at a surprising 5 Kg. (11 pounds). This type of bantam breed was introduced in China as the Chinese Shanghai and was later exported to America and Britain. Another bantam breed closely related and developed from this breed is the Pekin bantam.
Japanese bantams most commonly referred to as Chao, are literally spread world wide. These chickens are mostly used in shows and as pets.
Barnevelder bantam is one of the most popular breeds of bantam chickens for shows, carcass, and egg production. Producing rich brown eggs is their specialty and they are natural foragers on top of being a medium heavy breed which makes them excellent for either gaming or food.
Old English Game bantams also make excellent pets for children and are a source of special shows in the United Kingdom for this specific popular breed. This bantam breed is almost opposite to it’s standard counterpart, the Old English Game chicken in that it lacks an aggressive nature.
The Polish chicken is primarily bred for their show abilities due to the fact their appearance is almost beautiful. Boasting such colors as pink, purple, and blue, these bantams do not sit on eggs, but produce stark, white eggs.
Uccle is a town on the outskirts of Brussels, Belgium and is the namesake of the Barbu D’Uccle bantam with soft feathers. This chicken received it’s name from the French, translating as Bearded of Uccle.
The Pekin bantam, which has feathers on their legs and feet together with plumage that hangs to the ground, have been referred to as a “walking tea-cosy”. Noticeably smaller, measuring in at 20 – 30 centimeters and are well known for their mothering instincts.
The Serama bantam breed of chickens is basically still being produced as we speak. Although they are currently ranked as the smallest chickens in the world, their breed has not been bred true as of yet, meaning breeding them could result in any color, shape, size, etc.
The Sussex bantam is one-quarter the size of it’s standard counterpart, better know as the most common of backyard chickens in different countries around the world.

How To Raise Gamefowl
Choosing to raise gamefowl can be an gigantic undertaking, but with the right research and information you will be able to handle it like a pro. Knowing your breeds is perhaps the first and most important step to beginning the process. Have you decided whether the gamefowl will be raised for food or game only? These questions are important and information you will need to be aware of before starting the next steps involved in breeding or raising gamefowl.
If you have decided for certain you are going to raise them, the next step is educating yourself on the different breeds and types of wild fowl available for domestic raising. The main types that are available in the United States are quail, pheasant, partridge, ducks, and chickens. Far too many to name individually, but there are excellent sites online that give you specific information for any certain breed/type you are searching for. These fowl are available through many means, whether trained or un-trained and most of them at any age. If you are considering placing your gamefowl in competitions you may want to acquire younger fowl to allow for ample time for training and a healthy growth rate.
When it comes to feeding your gamefowl with the best nutrients and vitamins necessary to promote their health and well being, selecting good grains, corn, wheat and feed is important. Once again, knowing the exact information of your fowl (breed/type/main activity) is also necessary to this selection of food and is one of the determining factors in the fowls general health and success. Specific diets are available for different uses, such as cockfighting. Cockfighting requires a different diet to maintain the strength and stamina of the cocks being raised for this purpose as such, where as quail, pheasant, or ducks that are being raised for food will need a special diet to best prepare their carcass for eating. All forms of diets to best suit your purposes are available in books at your local library, or online using a specific title in a search engine.
Clean water is quite nearly the very essence of all fowl, whether gamefowl or not. This is one of the most important points for all fowl, that they have sufficient clean, fresh water daily. Just as with the nutrition, the hydration of your fowl is also dependant on the training or use you have planned for them. Strict training requires less water at one time, but offered several more times during the day. If you are merely raising your fowl for consumption, the hydration practices will be different from fowl training for cockfighting or otherwise. This can also be researched online or in the library.
All in all, it is important to be completely versed in the facts and information surrounding the raising of gamefowl for whatever purpose you choose to do so. Embarking on this journey can be fascinating, educational, and entertaining. Being well prepared with the best information you are able to locate is the best way to get started and an good step in the right direction to your success with your endeavor.

Questions and Answers On Pet Insurance
Most people are familiar with healthcare insurance for themselves and their family but what about their pets? Pet insurance is a new idea in insurance to help cover the four-legged members of the family. Granted, your workplace may not cover the insurance but it is very valuable to have in case your pet becomes sick. Routine veterinary care may not be expensive but if your pet was to become sick or injured, costs could quickly mount up and be beyond your ability to repay. The old adage of “better to be safe than sorry” is very true when it comes to insurance. It is better to have it and not need it than to find yourself with a sick pet and no way of paying the vet bills. Most people are unaware or inexperienced when it comes to pet insurance but this article will cover some of the basics when it comes to what to expect in pet insurance.
Where do I find pet insurance?
Most veterinary clinics carry brochures on pet insurance but if your vet does not, there are resources online that can help you. One website that is very popular with pet owners is www.petinsurance.com. VPI Pet Insurance offers insurance for dogs, cats, birds and other exotic pets. If you are not comfortable going with just one quote for pet insurance there are other avenues to explore. Many pet stores can give you information on what type of insurance they suggest. The same applies for any fellow pet owners on internet chat forums or from pet retail stores such as Petco or Petsmart.
What is covered?
There are usually several different insurance plans to choose from and each varies on what is allowed along with the amounts the insurance will pay per each procedure. Some routine visits may not be covered under the basic plans. In some cases it may be cheaper for you to pay for the entire vet visit rather than submit the claim and be reimbursed. You will have to review each insurance plan to determine which one is right for your particular needs. Unfortunately accidents will happen and you can never know the exact foreseeable health care needs that your pet will need during his or her lifetime.
How much out of pocket will I be expected to pay if my pet needs surgery?
Unfortunately the downside to pet insurance is that you will have to pay for the entire amount out of your pocket before the insurance company pays you a portion back. When you take your pet in for surgery you will need to take along a claim form that the veterinarian will complete. After completing the form and filling out the claim information, along with attaching copies of the receipts and invoices, you will mail or fax the information to the insurance. After reviewing the information the insurance company will mail out a check for the amount of the procedure they cover.
Some veterinary clinics will make payment arrangements with you in case of an emergency. If you have a long history of good payments to your vet, you can discuss this at a visit. Chances are high that he or she can work with you. The ultimate goal of both you and the vet is a healthy and safe pet.
Is there a limit on what my pet insurance will pay out?
Yes, there is a limit on how much of the procedure is covered by the insurance company. This amount varies depending on which insurance plan you select, what your deductible is and how much the actual procedure runs. When you sign up for pet insurance the company will provide you with a list of procedures they cover along with how much per procedure is covered.
What if I have to rush my pet into the vet on an emergency?
If an accident were to happen to your pet and you had to rush them into an emergency, your insurance is really of no use to you immediately. Unlike traditional healthcare insurance, pet insurance does not place stipulations on where and when you can receive care for your pet. You will have to pay the veterinary bill out of your own pocket and then receive the allotted reimbursement allowed by your insurance carrier.

Cat Insurance Ensures The Right Care For Your Feline
Do's and don't of pet insurance
Even though your cat probably doesn’t come to you when called and seems to have an agenda of her own most days, your life would undoubtedly be missing something special if your feline friend was not part of your household. It is also very distressing to the cat lover who’s cat has become ill and needs veterinary pet attention. For these situations, cat insurance policies can be both a financial and an emotional benefit to the owner.
When an adorable cat becomes ill or is somehow injured, most cat owners will worry and stress over the cost of proper veterinary care. Because all health costs have been soaring in both the animal welfare segment of the market, as well as in the case of human health care, there has been an increase in interest in pet health insurance. Because felines are one of the most popular types of house pets, insurance for health and wellness care has become very much sought after.
For many cat owners, one of the best benefits that they receive from having cat insurance, is the great level of peace of mind. This peace of mind comes because they know that they will not have to stress and worry about being able to pay for the veterinary pet care, should the cat become injured or fall ill.
If covered by insurance, then this means that the animal will receive treatment more quickly. This is due to the owner of the cat immediately taking action by having the animal get to the veterinary pet office, when there is a sign of sickness or in the instance of the pet being injured. Unfortunately, some pet owners must delay veterinarian visits because of the financial aspect of the office call.
With feline insurance coverage in place, you will not need to delay the visit and can relax knowing that the majority of the costs will be taken care of by the pet health insurance policy. The ability to quickly get the animal in to see the vet can make the difference between a quick and full recovery, or possible long-term health problems and even death.
In the worst case scenario, when a pet owner does not have insurance to help with the high expenses of animal care, it could mean having the cat put down to sleep. This happens when there is just no possibility that the family can handle the prices of expensice veterinary pet treatment or those types of surgery that may be needed to lengthen the life of the animal. While pet health insurance cannot guarantee that your cat will never succumb to a fatal illness, the best pet insurance benefit is knowing that your pet will be guaranteed proper treatment.
There are many options that you can choose from regarding cat health insurance, which will have a direct impact on the cost of the pet insurance premium you will pay. You can find a policy that will cover general wellness care as well as preventative health care procedures, for instance vaccinations as well as routine health screenings.
You might choose a form of cat insurance that only covers veterinary pet treatment for times of illness or to cover diseases and injury. This approach will help to reduce the cost of your premiums, but means that you would need to pay for preventative care out of your own pocket. Many times your veterinarian can guide you in making coverage decisions because they can provide insights about your family pets based on the animal’s health history and age.

Plasmacluster Ions – The One & Only Reliable Ionic Air Purifier Against Bird Flu Pandemic Fears?
Japan is well-known for cutting edge innovations that often go unnoticed by the Western world. But Sharp Corporation’s press release on 27 August 2008 cannot be ignored! Incorporated in its ionic air purifier, the Plasmacluster Ion Technology (more on this in a later post) has just been scientifically proven to be 99.9% effective in destroying the bird flu virus known as H5N1.
Every now and then, the press reminds us that bird flu is the prime suspect to cause mankind’s next pandemic. Pandemic sounds terrifying. It is. That’s when a highly contagious and deadly virus goes global, in a very negative sense. The 1918 Spanish Flu that killed 50 million people worldwide is the worst pandemic in human history! World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed on 5 October 2005 that the 1918 Spanish flu was caused by H1N1, a bird flu virus.
If fear is gripping you right now, is it time to PANIC?
Not quite, not yet anyway. Statistically, as recorded by WHO as at 10 Sep 2008, “only” 245 people have died from the H5N1 virus. This is since 1996 when the virus first surfaced in China. So what’s the fuss? Scientists monitoring the virus fear that it may mutate into a form that transmits from human to human. To the knowledge of WHO, there has been only one probable case of human-to-human transmission recorded in Thailand in September 2004. But if (it seems the virus has not reached the “when” stage) the dreaded virus mutation takes place, you can expect pandemonium on a global scale.
With increasing momentum. many countries are conscientiously preparing for the worse (more on this in a later post). As protectors of our families and loved ones, we should start doing some homework too.
Ok, so what’s all this got to do with Sharp’s ionic air purifier. Is it not just another ordinary ionic air purifier? It is ordinary in that it performs the usual functions of the run-of-the-mill air purifier by getting rid of dust, dirt, smoke, dander, pollen, cuisine and pet odours, pollutants, allergens etc. If there is really a tested defence shield against a deadly virus, why not? With Sharp’s Plasmacluster Ion Air Purifier, that is exactly what is promised.
The next obvious question for the value-conscious, would be “yes, that makes a whole lot of sense but at what cost”? At no extra cost, Sharp claims! Sharp contends that it is cheaper than any other competing ionic air purifier when measured over 5 years. A case of over-delivering by Sharp? But, how is this possible in this nothing-is-for-free world?
In promoting the Plasmacluster Ionic Air Purifier Model FP-N40CX, Sharp contends that it is definitely better value for money as there is no filter replacement costs for the first 5 years. At US$399, the Sharp model compares favourably against a typical competitor’s ionic air purifier that may cost US$160 upfront but over 5 years cost a total of US$560 due to annual filter replacement costs of US$100 each.
I would greatly appreciate any feedback on both sets of numbers above. Feel free to drop me a note if you have actual numbers.
In the meantime, I’m going to investigate intently the Sharp Plasmacluster Ion Technology. The time to research is now, while bird flu is still not quite at pandemic proportions.
Today is the day to get started. I have been there. It was like a horror movie that ran for months. Paranoia abounded in crowded places even as people commuted to work on buses and MRT trains. Taxis cruised empty as stories were told of the infected travelling in them to hospital. It was near pandemonium in many Asian cities as pandemic fears took hold. SARS! Four letters that struck terror in Asia. The SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) virus started spreading from Asia, infected 8,096 people around the world, resulting in 774 fatalities. Being well prepared is half the battle won.
Watch this space as we track exciting developments in our pursuit of safe, pure and clean air with nothing more than an ionic air purifier.
