fish – Healthy Underwater Ecosystem – Freshwater Aquarium Plant Maintenance

If you’re planning to get a freshwater tropical fish aquarium, then you should be aware that you can create an aquarium that is swirling with color and activity. The fresh water fish or tropical fish that are usually sold in pet stores have different patterns, colors, sizes, shapes, fin designs, preferred living conditions, and temperaments.

Starting a passion and hobby for starting an aquarium poses a lot of challenges and tricky tasks for most people. For instance, the success and productivity of your venture depends on the right choices and decisions you make especially in selecting fish that will eventually compose the fish community found in your aquarium. Hence, it helps to outline some of the basic things to do in order to determine the kind of fish or community that suits your preferences, interests, and what you are willing to invest.

It’s very common for fish to compete for water space in a freshwater tropical fish aquarium. To prevent this from happening, you will need to pick fish that tend to occupy space at different levels – top dwellers, middle dwellers, and the bottom dwellers. If you’re a newbie, you can try Danios or the Betta and Hatchetfish.

The middle dwellers include schooling fish, tetras, and rainbow fish. You can also get the Guppies, Platies, Swordtails, Mollies, and small Gouramis. The bottom dwellers’ mouths are down turned so that they can feed on the leftover foods found at the bottom and this can include the Loaches and Cory Cats.

Check the General Conditions of the Plants Regularly

Keep checking on the plants general conditions. Remove dead leaves on their stalks, damaged branches and other obstructions like nails to promote faster and proper growth of new stalks and branches.

Keep Safe Water Chemistry for Plant Growth

Observe safe water chemistry within the whole aquarium if possible separate fishes from plants when medicating either of them. When changing water please be reminded of transferring the fishes first to the other tank in order to avoid contamination. Always check for the pH level of the water before filling them to the tank. Avoid any kind of toxic elements or harmful substances in the water. When treating the fish avoid throwing medications in the water as they would contain some harmful elements that may destroy aquatic plants. If possible take them out, group each class and treat them separately. Water must be treated for chlorine when necessary to keep the normal safe water conditions for the plants and fishes to live longer.

There must be proper balance among all organisms inside the aquarium and these factors cited above can have a powerful impact to understand the unique freshwater aquarium ecosystem.
