This process is called classical conditioning and the clicker now becomes known as a “secondary reinforcement”. In the dog’s mind, the click has actually taken on some of the quality of the primary reinforcement, in this case – the food.

When your dog has made the association between the clicker and the food, you can begin to use the clicking sound for training. This is called operant conditioning.

Whenever you want to say ‘good dog’ after your dog has done something good, use the clicker instead of talking. An example is to click the moment your dog sits and your dog will learn that when he sits he gets the click and a reward.

So now your dog will more readily repeat that behavior in the future. The click, good behavior and a reward, becomes your dog’s understanding of your needs.

The clicker is quicker and more precise than saying ‘good dog’ because people have a tendency to remember to click with more consistency and precision, than when using verbal praise. People say ‘good dog’ so often throughout the day, this phrase often has less value than the special clicking sound..

Clicker training for dogs is one of the more systematic methods in dog training. The method stems from behavioral psychology research and is known as operant conditioning. But you don’t need to know technical terms in order to benefit from the method.

The method was first developed with dolphins. In this case, a whistle was utilised rather than a clicker. You can imagine how difficult it is to train a marine mammal compared to a dog. The whole method is based on positive reinforcement. It was very difficult to give a treat to a dolphin at the precise time the dolphin did the behaviour you wanted. However, you could easily blow a whistle at the precise time. Then you could follow that with some fish shortly afterwards.

In order to positively reinforce a wanted action, you need to reinforce it at the precise moment it occurs or very soon afterwards or the animal will not connect the reward with the behavior. The whole reward process is made so much easier and clearer by using a sound from a whistle or clicker to mark the action.

Firstly, you must positively associate the sound of the clicker with getting a treat. You do this by repeating the process of clicking and following the sound with a treat. Once the clicker is charged, you sound the clicker when the dog does a behavior you want and you always follow with a treat. A tool which helps the trainer in doing this is the target stick.

One of the first exercises in clicker training is to train your dog to touch the target stick with his nose. Once your dog accomplishes this, the target stick can be used to get your dog to any place where you put the target stick. This is really useful in training other behaviors.

Getting dog’s nose to contact the stick is easy. If you put it in front of him, he will almost certainly touch it. Then you click and treat. Be sure to let your dog to touch the stickof his own free will! Keep repeating for a few of minutes. Then take a rest.

It can take some time when a dog is introduced to clicker training, especially if he is an older dog. So you need to be patient. It may take a couple of training sessions before your dog gets it. But once he’s got it, it will stay.

Another tool which is very useful in clicker training is a computer mouse pad or something similar that you train your dog to step on with one of his front feet. You can get your dog to do this easily by just placing it down on the ground near him and waiting for him to step on it. As soon as he does it, click and treat. As with the target stick, repeat until the connection is firm. As with the target stick, this tool can then be used to guide your dog to a spot in further training.

In clicker training, a behavior is trained first as with the target stick and mouse pad and only then is a cue added. A cue means that you assign a verbal request like “sit” or “stay” to the behavior. You do this by saying the word just as you see the dog is about to do the action. As always you click and reward the behavior. Then, by repeating this, the cue becomes associated with the reward, just like the clicker sound is. Please note that when you start training with the cue, you don’t reward the behavior alone any more – it has to be preceded by the cue. You don’t click or reward when the dog offers the behavior without you having given the cue.

The biggest secret to dog training is understanding the method of positive conditioning. All that’s really necessary after that is patience and consistency. Most problems in training a dog stem from not understanding conditioning or from not applying it consistently.

To utilise it consistently, you will need lots of patience. You need to understand the levels of time needed to train a dog. You must also understand that being consistent doesn’t just mean during a short training session but whenever you and anyone else are interacting with your dog. It’s a sad fact that many owners positively reinforce problem behaviors in their dogs without being aware of it. For example, they enter the house, the dog is jumping up on them and they give affection to the dog. They are positively reinforcing their dog to jump up on people without realising it.

If you ever watch the Dog Whisperer on TV, you will see that even though the families have watched his program, maybe even read his books and know intellectually what they should do, they still reward all sorts of unwanted behavior without realising it. The Dog Whisperer is very different which is why the dogs behave differently with him. He behaves consistently and ignores the dog if it’s doing unwanted behaviors. In virtually every case that he helps, most of the problems start with inconsistency on the part of the owner.

Lots of awareness and self-discipline are needed to stop yourself giving affection to a misbehaving dog. You also need to be aware that any attention, even when it’s shouting at your dog “stop barking”, may act as a positive reinforcement. So, the best response to unwanted behaviors in your dog may be to ignore them by turning away from your dog and giving no attention.

It’s more effective to focus on reinforcing positive behaviors rather than focusing on using negative reinforcement for unwanted behaviors. As the dog is encouraged more and more in positive behaviors, less time will be given by him to negative behaviors which go unrewarded.

How do you positively reinforce behaviors you want to encourage? Possible rewards are tasty treats, affection or a toy to play with. Using small tasty treats is probably the easiest method. The treat needs to be given as close in time to the action as possible. Because of the importance of timing, the use of a clicker makes the reward process clearer to your dog. The clicker sound is used to mark the behavior precisely as it happens and the treat comes immediately afterwards.
