Vinegar-Water solution – mix a proportion of 7/8 water & 1/8 of vinegar together.Pour the mixture into a water pistol or what children call “super soaker” for longer distance shooting.

Aim and shoot at his chest whenever he/she can’t stop barking when you command it. Dogs hate the smell of vinegar and will usually back off and stop barking. She/Hemight even sneeze a few times. It won’t do him/her any harm, so you need not worry.

As always, praise it when it stops barking.

Last night my neighbor’s dogs kept me awake with their constant barking. Because last night had a full moon, the coyotes were out and disturbing the neighborhood dogs with their yapping and howling. My dogs also joined in with the others when they first heard the coyotes start in, but as soon as I told them to quiet down, they obeyed. My neighbor’s never quiet their pack of dogs-I don’t know how anyone could sleep that deep and it makes me mad and jealous at the same time.

This made me realize that even though the barking dogs were a real nuisance, they thought they were barking to protect their territory from the pack of coyotes-a very natural instinct.In the case of my neighbor’s dogs I blame the owners for the problem more than the dogs.

Even though our dogs may have a good reason to start barking, as their owner it is my job to keep it under control. My dogs bark for some very good reasons that I wouldn’t want to stop.

For example, here are some natural and valid reasons that will cause your dog will bark. • When something is approaching you, perhaps another dog or a stranger, your dog will bark to warn you. When your dog does this type of barking, it is to warn his master, and this is a good thing you won’t want to stop. Given that, you should still be able to quiet him with a command to stop. For instance, if your dog starts barking because he sees  someone getting out of a car in front of your house,  and you can see the person is not of any danger, you should be able to stop your dog’s barking  with a simple command. Protection barking is “good barking”-just make sure you can always control and stop the barking quickly with a command.

• Another common reason your dog will bark is because he is happy and excited about something. My dogs always do some barking at me and at each other when we play. This is the doggy’s way of saying he is having a lot of fun, and wants even more. When we are playing I only will quiet them down in the case of one of them getting a little carried away with the excitement.  If the barking is just sporadic and playful that is cool with me, but if one of them gets stuck on “bark” then I have to do something about it. Don’t let one of your dogs get into continuous barking while playing, or that could reinforce a bad habit of barking too much. Often dogs will start barking when their master comes home. This type of excitement barking is typical, and not a problem if it is limited to a few greeting barks. My dogs always greet me at the gate when I come home, and I don’t mind a couple barks because that is all there are. It would be a problem if the dogs got over-excited and didn’t stop their barking at the gate. If the dogs don’t stop barking very shortly after your arrival, the barking has become a problem, and needs correction.

• Many dogs will bark upon your arrival home. This is a very common since your dog is excited to see you again, and this is acceptable as long as the barking is very brief. I like to be greeted at the gate by my dogs, and I don’t mind a couple greeting barks at all. The problem is when your dog gets over-excited and barks incessantly for an extended period. If the dogs don’t stop barking very shortly after your arrival, the barking has become a problem, and needs correction.

• My female Lab will bark at me sometime when she wants to play.  If they continue barking at you to play, they are actually bullying you in a way. My dog had me pretty well trained through her bullying, so I know what this is like first hand. this is not a good thing, because as the Alpha dog, you must be the one to decide when playtime starts, not the dog. Otherwise you are letting the dog be the boss of you, and that isn’t good for your ability to train him. You have to be the Alpha dog in the relationship between you and your dog, so don’t let your dog’s invitation to play become a bullying act.

I think you’d agree the above barking behaviors are not troublesome-unless they are out of control. However, most of the other reasons dogs  bark create a disturbance and should be corrected.

Is your dog feeling bored, anxious or lonely?

A major cause of problem barking is a dog who feels anxious or lonely. Is your dog always left alone while you go to work? Your dog will need plenty (1-1.5 hours), of exercise to compensate for that. Try and fit in a long walk before or after work. Organising this can sometimes be difficult so why not engage the services of a professional dog walker. Is your dog feeling playful?

Giving in to barking so that you will stop what you are doing and play, is the worst thing you could do. A bad habit will be reinforced, if you do. Mutual respect is key to your relationship with your dog and harassing you in this way demonstrates lack of respect. Your dog will continue to demand your attention in this way, if you do not ignore this behaviour. Moving away and turning your back towards your dog is a way to demonstrate this effectively. This will confuse your dog at first. Since the barking behavior has worked in the past your dog may thinking that if it barks for just a little longer you will give in. Don’t Succumb! Be strong. You will probably have to endure worse barking before the barking improves. When your dog has realized the barking isn’t working remember to praise it. Your dogs wants to please you so you’ll need to use positive reinforcement. It won’t take long for your dog to re learn this behaviour, if you are consistent.

Effective dog training requires consistency. Dogs respond positively to knowing who the boss is. Your leadership is necessary for your dog to respect you and become well adjusted, well behaved and happy. A good dog is not necessarily a quiet dog. Your dog will learn from your clear instruction about the right times to bark.

It will conform to your wishes.

Now don’t be discouraged if this doesn’t work on the very first try. By doing these three simple steps whenever someone approaches your house or yard, your dog should soon pick up on when it’s time to stop barking.

Spending time with your dog and giving attention when they are quiet will prevent your dog from being bored starting barking problem.

A lot of dog owners would basically just run to an anti-barking collar. Why? They’re very convenient and they don’t require much time from the owner. What’s so appealing about collars is that they can help the owner supervise incessant barking while the owner isn’t around. As of late, there are generally three different types of anti-barking collars available in the market.

One is the sonar collar. This sonar collar is a discreet little thing. It basically releases a high frequency sound inaudible to humans and irritable to dogs whenever the dog would bark. This in turn will get them to think that the irritable sound is a punishment to their barking and will (hopefully) get them to stop.

The second one is the citronella collar. The citronella collar sprays a scent that dogs don’t really like. When the dog barks, they spray so that, just like the sonar collar, the dog would assume they’re being punished for their non-stop barking. Many say that dogs have already found a trick to outwit this collar, though.

One dog was reported to bark and bark until the citronella runs out. Then he wouldn’t have to bother about the smell anymore so he’d just keep on barking the whole day. Other dogs would bark and then sort of hold their breaths to avoid the smell and then bark again.

The third one is called the shock collar. This collar gets a lot of people iffy. It stops dog barking with electric shock. Intensity of the current can usually be changed.

People contast that shock collars are inhuman. Come to think of it no decent person would want to do that to their own child (or anyone they want to discipline for that matter) so doing it to their own pet sounds insane, illogical and altogether cruel as well. This collar is to be avoided at all costs.

Although they may all seem very practical, easy, and promising, collars are at most, simply a supplementary solution to incessant dog barking.

Before running to anti-barking collars, find a solution first—find out why your dog barks that way in the first place. If humans have psychologists, dogs have veterinarian behaviorists. Their role is to generally observe a dog’s environment and circumstances to figure out what exactly triggers their socially unacceptable behavior. And then based on their findings, they give training solutions to eliminate the behavior problem.

Some reasons as to why a dog would bark are things like the lack of things to do (meaning they have so much energy with nothing to use it with) or frustration (are they being bullied by dogs or other people?) to name two.

You can always call a vet behaviorist to help you find out your dog’s behavior problems. He or she can also give you a solution. In extreme cases, they might suggest an anti-barking collar but that should be used side by side with proper training techniques.

If you find out that your dog is just plain bored and has no other way to release pent-up energy, then work on giving your dog something to do. If you think your dog might just be bored, then it’s time to spend time with him playing—take him for walks, play catch with him, and let him socialize with other dogs. If you’re always out, put them in the care of someone else while you’re out—like a relative or a friend or a dog walker or a doggie daycare. Especially when you’re alone in the house, when you’re out, like humans, your dog feels lonely and bored and he will do anything to use all his energy.

You can also implement the “QUIET” command whenever he barks out of control. If your dog sees you as the alpha of the pack, then you wouldn’t have much trouble teaching the “QUIET” command. If the barking is too much of a nuisance already, then a collar might work as a temporary solution BUT always follow it up with behavior training.

If you’re seriously considering a collar, get the sonar collar as it is more efficient and humane. Never forget to tackle the problem with hands-on solutions and obedience training as well. Training your dog to respond to obedience signals is still the best and lasting way to stop dog barking behavior but still maintain his freedom to do what he naturally does.
