My wife has a little Yorkshire terrier. He’s a year and a half old and is called Monty. We got him as a very small puppy in 2008 and he was never really a barker, which was nice as Yorkies do have a tendency to be just a bit yappy.

However, just a few months ago things changed – if he heard any noise outside, he started barking. We live in a very quiet street and any external traffic is usually audible. Of course, it’s not all bad. For example, if an intruder tries to enter your house some advance warning is definitely welcome. Annoyingly, Monty kept barking for some time after the “threat” disappeared. It became annoying rather quickly.

Luckily for us, one of my wife’s friends had encountered a similar problem with her own dog and was able to advise how she had remedied her problem. My wife decided to take her advice and resolved to treat the problem before we all went insane – or Monty met with an premature end. She got herself a bottle of mineral water – one of the ones with the “sports” type cap. Every time that Monty started barking at some external noise she squirted just a little water on him, told him that he was naughty and shook the bottle in his general direction. She didn’t shout or scream at him. He was firmly but quietly told off.

As it transpired, she only had to actually splash him two or three times at most. After that all she had to do was shake the bottle at him and squeeze it so that it produced a crumpling sound. I have always thought that dogs were practically wild animals, and that they should be given a great deal of space in their behaviour.  Nevertheless, my neighbors don’t agree with me.  You see, we live in a quiet suburban area, and wild behavior isn’t really appreciated all that much.  Even barking gets on folks’s nerves, and when I first had my dog I have the cops called on me many times before I realized how simply people got irritated around here.  That is why I got my dog a dog bark collar.  Though they appear to be a very wicked way to treat an animal, I thought that dog bark collars were better than losing your dog because of too many beefs. 

There are many different types of dog bark collars.  A few of them are electric shock collars which give dogs a shock every time they make too much noise.  Other dog bark collars claim to be more decent.  Rather than surprising the dogs, they give them a jolt of citronella each time they bark.  The tough odor of the citronella stops the dogs from barking briefly, and if they start again they are going to get another blast in the face.  All these dog bark collar designs seem pretty cruel to me.  Although some dog bark collars are rather worse than others, not one of them appear particularly kind.  Nevertheless, I knew I had to get my dog and anti barking collar or else I would lose him.  The police were already threatening. 
When I started looking at dogs bark collars, I realized how many tools there were to coach your dog.  There were invisible fence collars that would actually train your young dog to not go outside of a certain area without you along with it.  Basically, every time the dog would go outside a certain prearranged fence, The dog bark collars would go off, giving it some sort of unpleasant stimuli.  Either the collar would shock it, squirt it with citronella, or subject it to a very high-pitched and annoying noise.  Either way, the average dog would quickly learn what the boundaries were. 

I decided to stick with the basic dog bark collars.  I hadn’t really needed to teach my dog not to bark, but I definitely did not need to subject it to even more unnecessary lessons.  No bark collars were the minimum that I could get away with, so I determined to go for those.

A further method of preventing dog barking is with the use of DAP (Dog Appeasing Pheromones) which is used as a spray, impregnated collar or plug-in diffuser (similar to an air freshener).
