Tips to Control Dog Barking
In my two other most recent articles I wrote regarding the various reasons for dog barking problems. In the first article, Some Good Reasons Why Dogs Bark, I wrote about when a dog’s bark is a welcome thing. In the other article, Dog Barking Problems, I mentioned five common but unacceptable reasons that dogs often bark excessively.
If you’d like some more information on correcting dog barking problems and other types of obedience training, please click here. Why Do Dogs Bark So Much?
The reasons for barking in the first article-protection; over-excitement to see you come home; bullying you to get your attention with constant barking; and getting carried away when playing with your other dogs or with you are types of barking that is usually easily corrected by calming your dogs down, and don’t rate as real problems. You will have some work to do to correct any of these dog barking problems if your dog has one of them. Unfortunately, excessive barking is a problem that takes some work to solve.
- It is common for dogs to commence their problem barking when the spot a stranger or another dog come into their view.
- Often a dog will respond to hearing other nearby dogs by joining in the barking frenzy.
- Often a dog that feels insecure and lacks self confidence may bark incessantly out of nervous anxiety.
- A dog sometimes will bark for an extended time because he is feeling bored or lonely .
- Your dog might be barking excessive at you to bully you for attention-he may want to eat, get played with or just some affection.
Use whatever tips work for you, depending on which of these dog barking problems your dog has.
- To correct the dog barking caused when your dog spots another dog or person outside the yard you will need to be able to block the view of the outside form your dog. Moving your dog to behind a solid type of fence would be a perfect way to block his view. If you don’t have any fenced areas, try putting your dog on a lead and keeping him in a part of the yard with no outside view.
- To solve the problem of dogs that bark in response to hearing nearby dogs barking, will require you to interact directly with your dog. For example, when your dog begins his response barking, immediately shut his mouth using your hand, and make sure to hold it shut until he relaxes and stops trying to bark. He won’t be liking this much, so you will have to hold onto his collar while you do this because he may try to move away from you. Spraying him in the face from a small spray bottle of water will startle your dog, and make him stop barkng for the moment. Another optinon you can try is to use a can filled with pebbles to startle your dog and stop the barking. Any of these3 tricks should work for stopping the barking-at least while you are actually applying them. AT the same time you stop the barking, you should also command your dog to “stop barking” or “be quiet”-whatever command you have chosen. The goal of the training is for your dog to stop barking just by using your vocal command.
- You can correct this anxiety type of behavior by givng your dog a lot of attention-play, train and exercise with him daily. An active, well trained dog is much happier, so by increasing his quality of life, he will be less nervous and less likely to bark out of anxiety or stress.
- To correct the dog barking problems cause by a bored or lonely dog, also will require increase attention by you in the way of exercising and playing and training your dog. Obviously if your dog is left alone most of the time and doesn’t get enough playtime and attention from you he is more likely to have this type of barking problem. Therefore, be sure to give your dog the minimum one and one half hours daily of activity he needs by exercising him, training him and of course, playing with him.
- Correct the problem of your own dog barking for attention by sayi9ng a firm “no” and then turning your back to him and ignoring him for a few minutes. Be sure not to let your dog be a bully to you. Besides the fact that the barking gets annoying, you must be seen by your dog as the boss-the Alpha dog-of the relationship. You will not be seen as Alpha by your dog if he can boss you around when he wants by barking at you.It is essential for training your dog that you alone are the Alpha dog
If none of these techniques works for you, the pet stores sell a few types of prevention collars. The first of these prevention collars is a Citronella oil collar-this works by spraying a mist of citronella oil into your dogs face when it is activated by the dog’s barking. The idea behind the second type of prevention collar is that it produces a very high pitched sound when your dog barks . Each of these collars works to stop the dog from barking due to his aversion to either the smell or the noise.
A third type of prevention colllar that is available in the store is the electric shock variety of collar. I cannot personally recommend this kind since I wouldn’t use it on my own dog.Although I have read and heard it is quite effective for stopping behavior problems such as barking, I would rather stick with more humane methods of correction with the dogs I love.

Dog Barking for Good Reasons
Last night my neighbor’s dogs kept me awake with their constant barking. Because last night had a full moon, the coyotes were out and disturbing the neighborhood dogs with their yapping and howling. My dogs also joined in with the others when they first heard the coyotes start in, but as soon as I told them to quiet down, they obeyed. My neighbor’s never quiet their pack of dogs-I don’t know how anyone could sleep that deep and it makes me mad and jealous at the same time.
This made me realize that even though the barking dogs were a real nuisance, they thought they were barking to protect their territory from the pack of coyotes-a very natural instinct. In the case of my neighbor’s dogs I blame the owners for the problem more than the dogs.
Even though our dogs may have a good reason to start barking, as their owner it is my job to keep it under control. My dogs bark for some very good reasons that I wouldn’t want to stop.
For example, here are some natural and valid reasons that will cause your dog will bark. You can see the difference between these “good barking” reasons and the reasons “problem barking”, and know whether your dog’s barking is a problem or not. In my next article I will discuss several types of “bad barking” behaviors that are problems you will need to correct Why Do Dogs Bark So Much?
- When something is approaching you, perhaps another dog or a stranger, your dog will bark to warn you. When your dog does this type of barking, it is to warn his master, and this is a good thing you won’t want to stop. Given that, you should still be able to quiet him with a command to stop. For instance, if your dog starts barking because he sees someone getting out of a car in front of your house, and you can see the person is not of any danger, you should be able to stop your dog’s barking with a simple command. On the other hand, if it is someone you want to discourage from coming onto your property (for example, maybe some over-zealous religious types), well then, you can let the barking continue a little longer. Protection barking is “good barking”-just make sure you can always control and stop the barking quickly with a command.
- Another common reason your dog will bark is because he is happy and excited about something. My dogs always do some barking at me and at each other when we play. This is the doggy’s way of saying he is having a lot of fun, and wants even more. When we are playing I only will quiet them down in the case of one of them getting a little carried away with the excitement. If the barking is just sporadic and playful that is cool with me, but if one of them gets stuck on “bark” then I have to do something about it. Don’t let one of your dogs get into continuous barking while playing, or that could reinforce a bad habit of barking too much. Often dogs will start barking when their master comes home. This type of excitement barking is typical, and not a problem if it is limited to a few greeting barks. My dogs always greet me at the gate when I come home, and I don’t mind a couple barks because that is all there are. It would be a problem if the dogs got over-excited and didn’t stop their barking at the gate. If the dogs don’t stop barking very shortly after your arrival, the barking has become a problem, and needs correction.
- Many dogs will bark upon your arrival home. This is a very common since your dog is excited to see you again, and this is acceptable as long as the barking is very brief. I like to be greeted at the gate by my dogs, and I don’t mind a couple greeting barks at all. The problem is when your dog gets over-excited and barks incessantly for an extended period. If the dogs don’t stop barking very shortly after your arrival, the barking has become a problem, and needs correction.
- My female Lab will bark at me sometime when she wants to play. If they continue barking at you to play, they are actually bullying you in a way. My dog had me pretty well trained through her bullying, so I know what this is like first hand. this is not a good thing, because as the Alpha dog, you must be the one to decide when playtime starts, not the dog. Otherwise you are letting the dog be the boss of you, and that isn’t good for your ability to train him. You have to be the Alpha dog in the relationship between you and your dog, so don’t let your dog’s invitation to play become a bullying act.
I think you’d agree the above barking behaviors are not troublesome-unless they are out of control. However, most of the other reasons dogs bark create a disturbance and should be corrected.

I Just Want The DOG To Stop Barking NOW!
Does your dog or even worse, your neighbor’s dog bark all the dang time?
If so it’s pretty easy to reach your whit’s end rather quickly.
After a while you really couldn’t care less why the little nimrod’s doing it, you just want to make the barking stop. Does that sound about right to you?
Trust me, I understand what you’re going through all too well.
How would I know these feelings of frustration so intimately?
Simple, my wife got a small Poodle and the little begger absolutely would not stay quiet for 10 minutes. I swear, if an ant walked across the driveway he would carry on for 15 to 20 minutes strait. I was just about to lose my marbles with the little loudspeaker.
Now, please don’t missunderstand me, I love animals and I especially love dogs. I don’t know about you, but personally I love well behaved dogs.
So, not really wanting to incur my wife’s wrath for suggesting Fido be relocated several States away just to make the barking stop, I started researching to really find a solution or at least find some other options and find them fast.
Here are a few of the things to stop a dog barking that I discovered:
All the books said “You need to find out why the dog is barking in the first place”. And I’m thinking yeah, right! I don’t care why the little dim bulb’s carrying on, just make him stop.
But I do have to agree with them, there is good barking and bad barking. So when training your dog it is important to teach your dog the difference between nuisance barking and good barking (like if it’s 2 am and I’m snoring keep quiet, but if you see a guy with a mask and a sack, Bark!).
As it turns out there is actually a lot of different kinds of barking, there’s reactive, territorial, separation anxiety, fear and warning barking. And without becoming a Sigmund Freud for Animal Planet tm I truthfully couldn’t tell you which was which.
I did find a few things that actually worked really well. What the heck it only took 5 hours of reading & video’s and it cost more than the dog did to buy all the books to find one that worked.
But here’s one of the tips that it said that worked pretty good. Every time the dog barks give it a piece of bacon with 1/2 a Prozac stuck into it (ok, ok, so that was my solution and not exactly what the book said, but the dog liked it!) Just kidding!
No really, what the books all said was give the dog an alternate outlet. And because it might actually take me an hour and a half to watch the TV show 60 Minutes, I’m thinking, alternate outlet, WHAT! they want me to plug the little bugger into a wall socket?
Well, turns out I was wrong, they meant every time he starts yapping give him a toy and shake it around for a second so he gets the idea to play with it. This way when the dog starts feeling anxiety, nervousness or separation it will look for the toy and find comfort in it.
There are a ton more tips that I got at => http://stopdogbark.tripleyourinfo.com/
But I sure hope this one helps, it worked for me even better than the Prozac and at over a buck a pill that stuff gets kinda pricey after a bit.
Erradicate Your Dog’s Barking Habit For Good
Excessive barking is the plague of dog owners everywhere. Depending on which breed of dog it is, will determine the amount it is predisposed to barking behavior. It’s a sad fact of life that dog kennels and rehoming centres are filled with dogs because of barking behaviors.
Stopping bad barking behaviors is actually quite easy to accomplish. The first thing to remember is that it is paramount to remember that you will not prevent your dog from stopping barking forever. This is a natural behavior for them. If you never want to hear a dog bark, then another pet would be a better fit for you. Dogs are going to bark when they are startled, when they are afraid, when they see other dogs. Dont prevent your dog from carrying on with these behaviors.
Some owners attempt this through the use of shock or spray collars. These apparatuses are very cruel. They deliver an electric shock each time the dog barks. The makers of such collars would have you believe that the shock they provide is no more that what you would get from static in your car, this is simply untrue. These collars are known to malfunction, shocking your dog repeatedly without cause, or delivering such severe jolts of energy that they cause first and second degree burns.
A much more effective way to stop bad barking behaviors is through simple distraction. For example, if your dog continuously barks at an unfamiliar person who you’ve invited into your home, tell them “no” in a firm tone of voice, then offer them a distraction, such as a toy, to divert their attention. It’s important that you do not yell at or punish your dog for barking. Confusion can occur because of this. Always remember that the key to training is the ability to remain consistent. You must distract and reprimand in the same way each time your dog decided to start barking when it shouldn’t be.
Praise them when they play with their toy instead of barking, in a light and excited tone of voice. Your dog will start to recognise what is required of it and will naturally be quiet whilst waiting for you to reward them as all dogs want to please. Continue on with the reward and reprimand until your dog forms a habit of knowing when barking is acceptable and when you do not want it.
Tips For Stopping Out Of Control Dog Barking
One of the biggest problems every dog owner has to go through is learning how to stop excessive dog barking. This is the sort of problem that could get your dog killed, annoy your neighbors, and cause you lots of frustration. What can you do about this problem? All you have to do to train your dog is have a better understanding of why your dog barks and what it needs.
Why Dogs Bark
A dog will bark for all sorts of different reasons. It may bark because it is bored, wants outside, someone is at the door, and who knows what else. The real point is to find what the cause is. When you know why your dog barks it will make things easy for you to train it and to take the right actions.
For example, if your dog is barking because it wants outside the simple solution may be to let it outside. Once that is over your dog can relax and stop it's barking. Of course it could be barking at something outside. But the point is that you have to address the situation head on.
Tactics For Stopping Dog Barking
There are plenty of different training techniques that you can try. One of the more common tactics now of days is to simply use a stop barking collar. These devices can work, but you have to make sure that they are used in the right way. For example, if your dog gets a shock for boredom barking you won't fix the true cause of that barking. Any dog that is bored needs to spend more time on walks, more time playing, and more time from you. It should not be shocked just for being bored.
One of the best ways you can stop your dog from barking is to make a noise that distracts your dog from what it is barking at. Some people like to do this by putting something in a cane or bottle and then shake it. Simply clapping your hands or whistling may also work well.
Barking At Your Neighbors
Allot of dogs bark at the neighbors. If your dog likes to bark at your neighbor then I recommend that you try to introduce your dog to your neighbor. As your dog gets to know your neighbor he or she is less likely to bark at them. Be sure that your neighbors are not teasing your dog when you are not there.
As you can see learning how to stop your dog from barking is something that you can do. All it takes is a little time and patience.
Stop Dog Barking
One of the worst problems dog owners have is teaching their dogs to stop barking for no reason. Barking is a serious problem for your dog and it will only get worse the older your dog gets. Many dog owners will find that adult dogs can be almost impossible to train once barking has become a habit. So, the key is to get them trained before it becomes a habit.
In this article were going to take a look at some of the things that you can do to control dog barking.
The first step to learning how to stop dog barking is finding out why your dog is barking. Sometimes this isn't as obvious as you might think. You might have a nasty neighbor who likes to tease your dog. A large number of dog owners have no clue that their dog is doing so much barking when they are not around. There may be some neighbors kids who walk by everyday and throw stones and scream at your dog. Sometimes you have to think a little outside the box.
Once you know what is causing your dog to bark you can go about training your dog. There are some cases where training won't even be needed. For the examples above you would need to move your dog inside to stop your annoying neighbors from bothering your dog.
Another very common reason dogs bark is out of boredom. This is often when your dog just keeps barking and barking for no apparent reason. When your dog is like this try taking it for a walk. If the dog is still barking when you come back, then you may have a different problem all together.
If your are really stuck with this barking problem you may want to consider some devices or collars. Allot of people hate shock collars, but they can be very effective for some dogs. The real key is to use the shock collar correctly. There are many collars that will allow you to adjust how much of a shock your dog will actually get. This makes sure that your dog will not be harmed in anyway.
Do remember to start your training with defining why your dog is barking first. This will make the training of your dog much easier. Many dog owners simply don't understand why their dog is barking in the first place. This often leads to a very flustered dog and owner. Yes, the barking could be as much of a problem for your as it is for you.
