For most dogs barking is part of their natural behavior, their method of communication with each other and their human parents, but occasionally their barking can be something that’s out of control. He will quickly figure out that your arrival home means you’re coming out to play and spend time with him, and his continuous barking will stop since he’s just trying to get you to come outside.

You can also address boredom barking. No matter where they are, dogs will bark if they want to be entertained and they’re bored; they just want to be played with. You can try out a few strategies to stop the problem barking, especially if it gets so bad that your neighbors complain about the barking. Try finding toys that will entertain him as well as be time consuming, like the dog toys you can stuff food or treats inside of. You might consider turning on the TV or radio so your dog won’t feel like he’s alone. You might also consider the idea of crate training your dog, and teach him that when he’s in the crate barking behavior will not allowed by you.

If your dog is barking due to other animals or unknown people, you will have to examine the circumstances before deciding how to stop it. After all, you might want your dog to keep the alert barking instinct, and you don’t want it to be trained out of them. If you’re not worried about your dog warning you, there are stop commands that you can use to teach your dog to stop barking if they want to warn you about a certain perceived threat. Your other choice would be to train him that a couple barks to let you know it’s an alert would be acceptable, but once you have acknowledged his alert he is to be quiet.
